Benigno (Ben) G. Reyna was appointed by President George W. Bush, after confirmation by the U.S. Senate, to serve as Director of the federal government's oldest law enforcement agency - the United States Marshals Service - on October 29, 2001.
Mr. Reyna began his law enforcement career in 1976 with the City of Brownsville Texas Police Department. He retired in May 2001. During his 25-year career he rose through the ranks and held several key positions including Commander of Professional Standards and Emergency Management Coordinator. His service to the City of Brownsville culminated in serving six years as Chief of Police.
In 1997, Mr. Reyna was appointed to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) by then-Governor George W. Bush. In 2000 he was appointed Presiding Officer, remaining in office until his appointment as Director of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Mr. Reyna has served in various positions for many federal programs. From 1998 to 2001, he served as a regional Law Enforcement Technology Expert with the Counter Drug Technology Assessment Center, which is part of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. He also served as a Law Enforcement Advisor of the Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee in the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of Texas, which is part of a Department of Justice nation-wide program.
Mr. Reyna is an honors graduate from the University of Texas - Pan American (Brownsville) where he received his Bachelor's of Science degree in Criminal Justice. In 2002 he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Texas Southmost College. Mr. Reyna is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
He has served as adjunct faculty in Criminal Justice at the University of Texas - Brownsville. He has numerous professional and educational affiliations, including the FBI National Academy Associates. He has received many awards and recognitions including the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy Associates Highest Resolution for his distinguished service in law enforcement. On July 29, 2005, during his farewell at the U.S. Marshals Service, he was presented the Edmund J. Randolph Award, the Department of Justice highest award for Outstanding Service by U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez.
Mr. Reyna has returned home to Brownsville and joined the University of Texas at Brownsville & Texas Southmost College as special assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as the Director of the Office of Homeland Security Programs.
